Instructor Spotlight: Anne Brummel

1. How long have you been teaching at Garden Street?

I have been teaching at Garden Street for about three years.

2. What do you teach at Garden Street?

I teach musical theatre and am a vocal performance coach.

3. What is your performing arts background?

I grew up in a theatre family. Both my parents were performers, my father actually still is a working actor. I began performing at a young age, and made my professional debut at age twelve on the national tour of Evita. I have been on Broadway in the musical Wicked, and have toured the country with numerous Broadway national tours.

4. What is your favorite thing about Garden Street students?

I love working with kids who are eager and passionate about learning. I think the students at Garden Street are always ready to do the work, and I love that!

5. Are you from the area? If not, where did you move from and why?

I was born in NYC and spent most of my childhood in Westfield, New Jersey.

6. What advice do you have for aspiring Broadway performers?

Never stop learning and growing. I think you need to have as many skills as possible. Theatre, now more than ever, challenges actors beyond singing, dancing, and acting. Now you need to know circus tricks, know how to play instruments, know different languages, know how to rap... the more you can do the better!

7. What is your teaching philosophy?

Honesty is everything. In life and on stage honesty is everything.

8. What would you do if you were not a performer?

I think I would want to go to culinary school. I love cooking!

9. What has been your past favorite role and why?

Hmm...this is tough. I have loved every role I've ever played. Obviously, playing Elphaba was pretty incredible, but I will always have a special place in my heart for Eva Peron in Evita.

10. Do you have any dream roles?

Yes! Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Lady of the Lake in Spamalot, and the Baker's Wife in Into The Woods ( i didn't make the cut in Garden Streets upcoming production)
